Engraved cutting board Atlanta: wood choice, care and gift ideas

If you want an engraved cutting board in Atlanta, the short answer is this: maple and walnut give the crispest engraving, bamboo is the budget option that still looks good, and the laser cuts the design into the wood so it will not peel or wash off. FSH Labs is a laser engraving shop in Mableton, and personalized cutting boards are part of our product line. Here is what we walk buyers through before an order goes to production.

Key takeaways

  • Wood choice drives contrast more than anything else. Maple engraves with a crisp dark mark against pale grain. Walnut starts dark, so the design reads as a subtle tonal change.
  • The laser cuts the design into the surface. Nothing is printed or applied, so there is no decal to peel. The engraved area will pick up oil and knife marks over time.
  • Pick the face based on how the board will be used. Display boards get engraved on the presentation face. Workhorse boards get engraved on the back so the front stays smooth for chopping.
  • Hand wash only. Warm water, mild soap, dry it right away and re-oil every few weeks. A dishwasher will ruin any wood board, engraved or not.
  • Boards ordered from our blanks take 5 to 7 business days. The Georgia board is cut in our shop and takes 3 to 5 business days.
  • Every personalized order gets an emailed proof before production. Nothing gets engraved until you approve it.

Hardwood, bamboo or a Georgia shaped board?

Three options cover most orders, and the right one depends on who is getting it and how many you need.

The solid hardwood board is the one people keep for decades. It is 11 x 17 x 1 in, solid maple or walnut, with a juice groove and engraving on one face. It runs $79 each at 1+, $72 each at 10+, $69 each at 25+, $65 each at 50+ and $62 each at 100+. If the gift is for a couple, a retiring colleague or a client you actually like, this is the board.

The bamboo board is the budget gift that still looks good. It is 13.5 x 9.75 x 0.43 in with a cut-out handle, priced at $24 each at 1+, $19 each at 10+, $16 each at 25+, $14.50 each at 50+ and $13.50 each at 100+. This is the one to order when you need twenty of something and the budget has to survive it. Church volunteer teams, office staff gifts and client drops all fit here.

The Georgia board is for locals and for people who moved away. It is about 11 x 14 x 3/4 in, solid maple or walnut cut in our shop in the shape of the state, finished with food-safe oil. We engrave a name or a heart over your town. It is $69 each at 1+, $62 each at 10+, $58 each at 25+, $55 each at 50+ and $52 each at 100+, and it takes 3 to 5 business days because we cut it here.

If you are not sure, order one board first and see how the engraving looks in your hands. That is the cheapest way to make the decision.

How deep does the laser engrave, and will it stay dark?

The cut is a fraction of a millimeter deep. It is shallow enough that the board stays flat and safe to use, and deep enough that you can feel the design with a fingertip. That feel is the point. It tells the person holding it that this was cut into the wood, not stamped on top of it.

Depth and contrast move together. A deeper engraving burns more of the surface and gives more contrast, but it also opens the grain and leaves more texture. A lighter pass stays smoother and more subtle. On maple, even a light pass reads clearly because the wood underneath the surface is darker than the pale face. On walnut, the engraved tone is close to the natural color, so the design reads as a shadow rather than a line.

Re-oiling changes both at once. The board darkens, the engraving darkens, and the contrast you approved in the proof stays roughly where it was. That is why we send a proof instead of describing it. You should see the actual layout on the actual wood tone before we cut.

Which side of the board should be engraved?

Our boards are engraved on one face, and you choose which one. There are two rules of thumb.

If the board is a gift that will sit on a counter or hang on a wall, engrave the presentation face. On the hardwood board that means the face with the juice groove. The design and the groove read together as one finished piece. On the bamboo board the handle cut-out marks the top, so the engraving goes on that same face.

If the board is going to be used hard for chopping, engrave the reverse. The knife work happens on the plain face, and the design stays out of the way on the back. You still get the personalization, and the front stays smooth.

Tell us which face you want in the order notes. If you forget, we will ask when we send the proof. Nothing is cut until you answer.

How do I care for an engraved cutting board?

Hand wash it. Warm water, a little mild dish soap, a soft sponge, then towel dry immediately. Do not soak it, do not put it in the dishwasher and do not leave it sitting wet on the counter. Wood moves as it takes on and loses moisture, and a soaked board can crack along the grain.

Re-oil every few weeks with a food-safe mineral oil or a board butter. Oil the whole board, not just the engraved area. A thin coat, let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe off what has not soaked in. If the surface starts looking pale or dry, it is asking for oil. More often in a dry kitchen, less often in a humid one.

For the engraving itself, skip the abrasive scrubber. A soft sponge is fine. The design is cut into the wood, so it will not peel or wash off, but abrasive pads will raise the grain and soften the edges of the lettering over the years. If you use the board for raw meat, treat it the way you would treat any wood board: wash it, dry it and re-oil it. Store it on edge when you can, so air moves around both faces.

What makes a good closing gift for a realtor?

Realtors buy in batches, and the order is usually the same every time: a board with the family name and the closing date. It is personal, it is useful and it does not end up in a drawer.

For volume, the bamboo board is the practical pick. At $24 each at 1+, $19 at 10+, $16 at 25+, $14.50 at 50+ and $13.50 at 100+, you can keep a stack on hand and still keep the per-gift cost low. Add the address or the closing date and it stops being a generic gift.

If you are buying for a single high-value closing, step up to the solid hardwood board. Maple or walnut, 11 x 17 x 1 in, juice groove, engraved on one face. It is the kind of thing that stays on the counter for years. If your closings are clustered, order the batch ahead of the calendar. Boards from our blanks take 5 to 7 business days.

Wedding, housewarming and recipe board ideas

For a wedding, the hardwood board with the couple's names and the date is the safe answer. It reads as a keepsake without being fragile, and it actually gets used.

For a housewarming, the Georgia board with a heart over the new town is the one that gets a reaction. It takes 3 to 5 business days. If the new house is outside Georgia, use the hardwood board with the family name instead.

The recipe board is the one people get emotional about. Send us a photo of a recipe in a loved one's handwriting, and we clean it up and engrave it, stains and all. The coffee ring stays in the design because that is part of the handwriting. It is $38 each at 1+, $30 each at 10+, $26 each at 25+, $24 each at 50+ and $22 each at 100+, on a 13.5 x 9.75 in bamboo board with a handle or a 9 x 12 x 3/4 in solid maple board. A grandmother's recipe card is the classic version. It works for weddings, Mother's Day and memorial pieces.
