Laser cut hardboard

Fit
When hardboard is the right call
It is the shop-floor sheet: templates you trace or rout around, stencils, backers, drawer bottoms and quick test cuts before committing a design to acrylic or plywood. The laser leaves a dark brown edge.
Good for
- Routing and tracing templates
- Stencils
- Backer panels and drawer bottoms
- Test cuts before the real material
- Model making
Pick something else when
- It needs to be thicker than 1/8 in. Baltic birch and MDF come in 1/4 in.
- Both faces will show. Choose birch or acrylic for a part people see from every side.
Design rules
What the laser needs from your file
- Largest part
- 23.2 x 11.6 in (589 x 294 mm), either orientation
- Smallest part
- 1/4 in on its short side; smaller gets a person's review
- Between cuts
- Leave at least 1/16 in of material between holes and edges
- Outlines
- Closed shapes only, any number of parts per file
- Text
- Convert to outlines, or it won't be cut
- Files
- DXF or SVG, priced instantly
Care and handling
Looking after hardboard parts
- Wipe the cut edges with a damp cloth to take off the soot.
- Keep it dry. Like all fiberboard, it swells if it soaks up water.
