Laser cutting material
Laser cut MDF
MDF (medium-density fiberboard) is wood fiber and resin pressed into a flat, uniform sheet. With no grain and no plies it cuts the same in every direction, stays flat, and takes paint with nothing showing through.

Fit
When mdf is the right call
It is the economical choice for parts that are about shape rather than strength: templates, spacers, mock-ups and anything that gets painted. The laser leaves a dark brown edge.
Good for
- Router and drilling templates
- Jigs and spacers
- Painted signs and displays
- Architectural and product models
- Packaging inserts
Pick something else when
- It has to carry load or hold screws in its edge. Baltic birch is stiffer for its weight and grips screws far better.
- It might get wet. MDF swells and doesn't recover; seal it well or choose acrylic.
Design rules
What the laser needs from your file
- Largest part
- 23.2 x 11.6 in (589 x 294 mm), either orientation
- Smallest part
- 1/4 in on its short side; smaller gets a person's review
- Between cuts
- Leave at least 1/16 in of material between holes and edges
- Outlines
- Closed shapes only, any number of parts per file
- Text
- Convert to outlines, or it won't be cut
- Files
- DXF or SVG, priced instantly
Care and handling
Looking after mdf parts
- Seal the cut edges before painting. The edge soaks up paint faster than the face.
- Wipe the soot off the edge with a damp cloth before handling clean parts.
- Keep it dry. Even a damp shop can swell the edges.
